The entangled whale calf was spotted on Tuesday morning by a member of the public, who quickly alerted the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol. The net was located about 500 metres off Greenmount Beach at Gold Coast city, Australia.
The rescue operation took around 45 minutes. All the while two adult whales, one of whom was believed to be the calf’s mother, remained close by.
‘The mother was very close to the calf and very close to us and very interested in what we were doing,’ said Trevor Long, Seaworld director of marine sciences. ‘The mother had a tiny piece of net on her nose and there was a big hole beside where the baby was… The calf had a lot of skin abrasions where the net had rubbed it raw — I don't think these are life-threatening — but it identified it had been in the net for some time.’
