A plane carrying 47 people (35 passengers and 12 crew members) has crashed into a lagoon near Micronesia.
Air Niugini is the national airline of Papua New Guinea, whose Boeing 737-800 is reported to have overshot a runway due to poor weather conditions.
According to JACDEC, an independent website monitoring airline safety and crash data, weather conditions suddenly took a turn for the worse as the plane began to descend. It is thought that heavy rain reduced visibility.
All those on board are reported to be safe thanks to the help of local fishermen who quickly came on the scene to rescue people in their small motor boats. They were all taken to hospital and no serious injuries were reported.
One of the passengers, who reportedly works at a Micronesia-based newspaper, described the scene: ‘I thought we landed hard until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water was coming in, and I thought, well, this is not, like, the way it's supposed to happen’.
Air Niugini has said that the airline ‘is making all efforts to ensure the safety and immediate needs of our passengers and crew’.
