Killer whales - New research reveals that orcas can imitate human speech, saying words such as ‘hello’, ‘one’, ‘two’ and ‘bye bye’. The study also shows orcas are able to copy unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas. Scientists say the discovery helps reveal how different pods of killer whales have distinct dialects, giving weight to the idea that they are the result of imitation between orcas.
Glee star dead - Former Glee actor Mark Salling, known for his role as footballer Puck, has been found dead near his Los Angeles home, his lawyer confirmed. US media reports suggest he may have taken his own life. The 35-year-old was expected to get between four and seven years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing child sex abuse images. His sentencing was due on 7 March.
Lorde snubbed - New Zealand singer Lorde has taken out a full-page advert in her home country’s largest newspaper thanking readers for ‘believing in female musicians’ after she was overlooked at this week’s Grammys awards. The singer was at the centre of a debate over female representation in music after she was the only woman on the album of the year shortlist, and the only nominee not asked to perform solo on the night.
Trump’s alleged affair - Allegations that Donald Trump paid hush money to hide an affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels took another twist with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel last night. Hours before she was set to appear on the show, Daniels issued a surprise statement in which she flatly denied the affair in 2006. But on the show, Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, cast doubt on the authenticity of the statement. She was later contradicted by her attorney moments after the interview concluded.
State of the Union - US President Donald Trump argued a ‘new American moment’ was happening as he delivered his State of the Union speech to Congress. The Republican leader said he was ‘extending an open hand’ to Democrats to work together. Mr Trump also said he was ordering Guantanamo Bay to be kept open, the controversial detention camp.
UK PM defiant - Theresa May has accepted she needs to talk to voters about her Government’s achievements amid Tory concern that she is underperforming as Prime Minister. But the Conservative leader argued that she is ‘not a quitter’ in the face of recent calls to name a date for her departure.
