This Indonesian teenager was stranded in the ocean for 49 days on a floating hut - and survived

An Indonesian teenager has survived 49 days stranded in the middle of the ocean.

19-year-old Aldi Novel Adilang had only a few days’ worth of supplies aboard his small, floating hut when the rope anchoring it to the seabed snapped due to heavy winds on 14 July, sending him adrift.

Adilang worked as a lamp keeper on a ‘rompong’ – a floating fishing trap which doesn’t have an engine or paddles – located 125km off the Indonesian coast. His job was to light the lamps which would attract the fish.

Each week, he would be brought food, water and fuel by a member of the company that employed him and they would collect the fish.

After Adilang’s supplies quickly ran out, the teenager resorted to catching fish, which he cooked by burning the rompong’s wooden fences. According to The Guardian, he kept hydrated by sipping seawater through his clothes to minimize salt intake.

10 ships sailed past Adilang before he was eventually picked up by a Panamanian-flagged vessel off the waters of Guam.

The ship, which was on route to Japan, was instructed to take Adilang to the destination. He arrived on the 6 September and flew back to Indonesia two days later. It has been reported that he is in good health.
