It's true: we are living through a golden age of television.

Last night's Emmy Awards was a celebration of that talent, as well as a great bit of advertisement for Netflix and HBO, given that so many of the networks' shows were up for awards.

There were some heartwarming moments. Glenn Weiss, the winner for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special at the 2018 Oscars, used the opportunity first to pay tribute to his late mother—and then to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. Jan made her way to the stage, after which Glenn got on one knee, and she basically couldn't say no. So they are engaged now, folks.

Henry Winkler was crowned a winner. The enthusiastic standing ovation for the 72-year-old's win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for playing an enthusiastic acting coach on HBO's dark showbiz satire Barry spoke for itself.

Amy Sherman-Palladino made Emmy history with her wins for comedy writing and directing for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, making her the first woman in the awards’ 70-year history to do so.

British stars won big last night, with Claire Foy taking home Best Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of the Queen in Netflix's The Crown, and Thandie Newton being awarded Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Westworld. Matthew Rhys picked up Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series for The Americans, while Charlie Brooker was given Best Writing for a Limited Series for Black Mirror.

In terms of total prizes awarded (including the wins at last week's Creative Arts awards), Game Of Thrones came out on top with nine wins - including Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage - just ahead of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, which picked up eight, and American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace with seven.

Surprisingly, The Handmaid’s Tale, last year’s big winner, went home empty-handed, as did Donald Glover's Atlanta.
