As of 1 January 2018, it has been legal for individuals over 21 to possess ‘up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana for personal consumption’, and those regulations will also apply when you walk through security at LAX.

Los Angeles International Airport’s new regulations will honour Proposition 64, otherwise known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which California passed in 2016.

However, you’ll need to read up on what the local law dictates at your destination. If you’re travelling overseas or between states, you might be breaking the law on arrival. Also, planes are subject to federal law, under which marijuana is still illegal, so you could still face fines or detention if you carry it on board.

At present, recreational marijuana has been legalised in 9 states and Washington D.C. Colorado and Washington state were the first states to vote in favour of legalising recreational marijuana in 2012.
