Tragedy in Afghanistan - Suicide bombers detonated explosives before storming the offices of the Save the Children charity in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad. At least two people have been killed and 12 injured, officials say. The Islamic State has said three of its fighters are behind the attack, which is thought to still be unravelling.
ISIS fight - The US-led coalition fighting ISIS killed roughly 150 ISIS fighters in a Saturday airstrike, Col. Ryan Dillon, a spokesman for the coalition, told CNN. The target of the strike was an ‘ISIS headquarters and command and control center,’ Dillon said.
‘Snake tactics’ - Pope Francis has rebuffed the ‘snake tactics’ of those who spread fake news, saying the first case of misinformation is in the Bible when Eve is tempted by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit. The episode showed the ‘dire consequences’ of fake news can, the Pope warned in a document.
Drought - Cape Town residents may lose piped water to their homes within two months if they do not act now to combat the effects of the worst drought to hit South Africa’s second city in nearly a century. Local authorities have warned four million people that if they do not reduce consumption by ‘day zero’, 12 April, they will have to queue at 200 standpipes for daily rations of 25 litres.
Libyan devastation - Two car bombs have exploded outside a mosque in anl area of the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing 27 and wounding more than 30, officials said. In a potentially deliberate attempt to maximise effect, the second bomb went off half an hour later as residents and medics tried to evacuate the wounded.
‘Enjoy hell’ - After listening to the pleas of more than 150 victims, a judge is set to sentence a Michigan doctor, Larry Nassar, for years of sexual abuse by molesting Olympic gymnasts and other young female athletes instead of solving their sports injuries. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina will hear from a few more victims and then send Nassar to prison Wednesday. He faces a minimum prison term of 25 to 40 years but it could go higher. He is already serving 60 years on charges of child pornography.
