Award season - The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards have been announced, with The Shape of Water taking the lead. Guillermo del Toro's fantasy romance received 13 nominations, including best picture. Dunkirk follows with eight nominations, while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven.
Probe in Sessions - US Attorney General Jeff Sessions was questioned about whether Russia colluded with the Trump campaign in the 2016 election. A Department of Justice (DOJ) spokeswoman confirmed to the BBC that the meeting took place last week. Sessions is thought to be the first member of President Donald Trump's cabinet to be questioned.
Tsunami alert - A tsunami alert has been issued after an 8.0-strength earthquake was recorded off the southern Alaskan coast in the US. The quake struck about 300km south-east of Kodiak at a depth of 10km at 09:31 GMT, the US Geological Survey said. The US National Tsunami Warning Center said the alert was in effect for areas including the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska. People have been told to seek refuge on higher grounds in affected areas.
‘Fake news’ - A man from Michigan has been arrested for threatening to kill CNN employees after telephoning the network to tell them: ‘Fake news. I’m coming to gun you all down.’ Brandon Griesemer appeared in federal court in Detroit on Friday charged with using interstate communications to threaten injury. Griesemer, 19, could face up to five years in prison if convicted.
Major setback for media mogul - Rupert Murdoch’s £11.7bn bid to take full control of Sky has been provisionally blocked by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, citing that 21st Century Fox’s bid to take control of the 61% of Sky it does not already own was not in the public interest due to concerns about media plurality.
Avalanche in Japan - A member of Japan’s self-defence forces has died and about a dozen skiers were injured after a volcano erupted near a ski resort, triggering an avalanche and flying debris. The skiers were injured when they became trapped by the avalanche or were hit by falling volcanic rocks from Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, local media reported.
Loss for diversity - UK beauty blogger Amena Khan says she's pulling out of a L'Oreal campaign ‘because of the current conversations surrounding it’. Her decision follows the discovery of tweets she wrote in 2014, which some have branded as ‘anti-Israel’.
A talent dies - Iconic South African musician Hugh Masekela died aged 78 on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer, the South African government announced on its official Twitter page. Known as the father of South African jazz, the trumpet player represented the struggle against apartheid and championed the experiences of everyday South Africans.
