Kushner downgraded - Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc, one of the US’s largest sports retailers, is ending the sale of all assault weapons in its stores after the recent shooting at a high school in Florida. In an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, Dick’s CEO Ed Stack said the company would no longer sell assault-style firearms or high-capacity magazines, and would impose a ban on sales of guns to those under age 21. 'We’re taking these guns out of all of our stores permanently,' Stack said. 'We did everything by the book. We did everything that the law required, and still he was able to buy a gun. And when we looked at that, we said the systems that are in place across the board just aren’t effective enough to keep us from selling a gun like that. And so we’ve decided we’re not going to sell the assault-type rifles any longer.'
North Korea’s handouts - A leaked UN report alleges North Korea sent Syria more than 40 items used in ballistic missile and chemical weapons programmes between 2012-17. Experts monitoring sanctions against North Korea said the transfer of prohibited ballistic missile, conventional arms and dual use goods were discovered while they were investigating. The report also said an unnamed UN member state reported evidence that Myanmar received a range of conventional weapons from North Korea, including multiple rocket launchers and surface-to-air missiles.
Plastic-free - The Netherlands have are the first of Europe’s countries to introduce a plastic-free supermarket aisle, in what campaigners claim is a turning point for fighting plastic pollution. The shop in Amsterdam opened its doors on Wednesday, offering shoppers the chance to choose from more than 700 plastic-free products, all available in one aisle. It comes amid stark warnings from scientists that plastic pollution is now so widespread it risks permanent contamination of the natural world.
Bucket list killer - A British woman ‘obsessed’ with serial killers and had murder on her ‘bucket list’ has been jailed for killing a teenager. Jemma Lilley, previously of Stamford, Lincolnshire, garrotted, stabbed and buried Aaron Pajich at her home in Perth, Australia. The 26-year-old was convicted alongside housemate Trudi Lenon at the Supreme Court of Western Australia in November. The pair have been sentenced to life with a minimum jail term of 28 years.
Bollywood star dies - Police in Dubai have halted their investigations into the death of Bollywood star Sridevi Kapoor, handing over her body to relatives so she can be brought back to India for her funeral. The 54-year-old actress died on Saturday ‘due to accidental drowning following loss of consciousness’, police said. She was found in a hotel bathtub, and her body has been embalmed so her body can travel.
Charitable results - Disney is celebrating the overwhelming success of Black Panther by donating $1m (£718,000) to a national youth club.
