Tragedy in Syria - Warplanes showered a rebel enclave in Syria with bombs for a fifth straight day on Thursday, while the United Nations pleaded with Syrian and ally forces to stop the brutal offensive and prevent a ‘massacre’. More than 300 people have been killed in the Ghouta district on the outskirts of Damascus since Sunday night, and many hundreds have been wounded, with reports that Russian and Syrian planes have struck hospitals and other civilian targets.
Shocking proposal - Donald Trump has said arming teachers with guns could prevent shootings like the recent tragedy in Florida that left 17 dead. A staff member with a gun could end an attack ‘very quickly’, he said. Trump’s suggestion has prompted shock when he met with emotional survivors of the 14 February massacre. The US President called for improved background checks on gun buyers as well.
First of its kind - Doctors in India who have removed a 1.8kg brain tumour from a man, Santlal Pal, and claim it could be the largest in the world. The seven-hour surgery took place on 14 February at the Nair hospital in Mumbai. ‘Now it's a matter of recovery but he's out of danger’, Dr Trimurti Nadkarni, chief of neurosurgery, told the BBC.
Green light for antidepressants - Scientists say they have put an end to one of medicine's biggest debates about the effectiveness of antidepressants. Scientists conducted a study, which analysed data from 522 trials involving 116,477 people, found 21 common antidepressants were all more effective at reducing symptoms of acute depression than placebo pills.
Vexatious lawsuits - Some European MEPs are going after companies that they say are targeting investigative journalists with ‘abusive’ lawsuits and other legal threats in an attempt to silence critical journalism. Under a new proposal put forward by six MEPs, firms involved in so-called vexatious lawsuits could face financial fines if they pursue abusive behaviour towards reporters.
