Monday briefing: Thousands told to evacuate in Bali as Mount Agung volcano looks set to erupt

Eruptive disruption - 100,000 people have been told to evacuate in Bali as a large eruption of Mount Agung volcano could be imminent, Indonesian officials have said. So far 40,000 people have been moved away from the volcano and tens of thousands of travellers have been stranded due to airport closures. The warning level has been raised to the maximum of four, indicating that the volcano could erupt at any time.

Extra measures - North Korea has fortified its border with the South at what appears to be the location where a defecting soldier made a dramatic escape to freedom. A photograph posted on Twitter by the acting US ambassador to South Korea, Marc Knapper, showed a small group of civilian workers, watched by North Korean soldiers, digging a deep trench at the point the defector abandoned his vehicle. A security video depicting the soldier’s escape was released by the UN and widely shared last week.

Penguin population - Almost half the breeding population of the world’s most endangered penguin species, the yellow-eyed penguin, has disappeared in one part of New Zealand and conservation groups believe commercial fishing is to blame. The yellow-eyed penguin is endemic to New Zealand’s South Island and sub-Antarctic islands, where there are just 1,600 to 1,800 left in the wild, down from nearly 7,000 in 2000.

Crunch time - Pope Francis has arrived in Myanmar for a three-day visit, with speculation mounting about whether he will talk about the plight of the Muslim Rohingya, who have been forced to flee to nearby Bangladesh in their hundreds of thousands. The visit could be the toughest challenge the Pope has faced.

Modern slavery - An undercover CNN investigation in November revealed that refugees in Libya are regularly being sold as slaves, prompting global condemnation and outrage. The findings serve as a chilling reminder of the past horrors of slavery, but also that the problem has by no means been solved. As of 2016, there were an estimated 45 million human beings around the world living in slavery, according to the Global Slavery Index.

Royal wedding - England's Prince Harry is engaged to Suits actor Meghan Markle, Clarence House has announced. The couple became engaged earlier this month in London, and the wedding is due to go ahead in Spring 2018.
