Justice served - A South African appeal court has more than doubled the former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s prison sentence for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The supreme court of appeal (SCA) increased Pistorius’s sentence from six years in prison to 13 years and five months as his previous sentence was deemed too lenient. Pistorius killed Steenkamp by firing four bullets from a handgun through a closed toilet door. He claimed he mistook her for a burglar.
A new era - Emmerson Mnangagwa has been sworn in as president of Zimbabwe, becoming the country’s second leader since independence from white minority rule in 1980. Mnangagwa took his oath of office in front of tens of thousands of Zimbabweans who had gathered at a stadium in Harare, signalling a new era for the African country.
Biting back - Uma Thurman has broken her silence on Harvey Weinstein and the ongoing stream of allegations against him. In a Thanksgiving Instagram post, the actor said: ‘I said I was angry recently, and I have a few reasons, #metoo, in case you couldn’t tell by the look on my face. I feel it’s important to take your time, be fair, be exact, so... Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! (Except you Harvey, and all your wicked conspirators - I’m glad it’s going slowly - you don’t deserve a bullet).’
China shaken - A Beijing nursery is accused of giving injections and feeding drugs to toddlers, in a case that has sparked outrage in China. Authorities are now investigating the nursery, which is a branch of the well-known RYB Education chain.
Selfless deed repaid - And for some uplifting news that will make you have faith in humanity. A fund set up to raise money for a homeless man who helped a woman when her car ran out of petrol has collected more than 280,000 US dollars (£211,000). Kate McClure, 27, started the Gofundme.com campaign earlier this month after she became stranded on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia and a homeless man, Johnny Bobbitt Jr, walked a few blocks and bought her some with his last 20 dollars (£15).
