Plane crash in Nepal - A Bangladeshi aircraft carrying 67 passengers and four crew members has crashed at Kathmandu airport in Nepal. The US-Bangla Airlines plane fell down a slope as it was landing, sliding for about 300 metres before it stopped at a football pitch. Nepali police said at least 50 were killed and 23 injured, with another 10 people still unaccounted for.
Nerve agent attack - Theresa May is expected to announce that the UK believes Russia is behind the nerve agent attack in Salisbury, a senior Conservative MP has said before Monday morning’s national security council (NSC) meeting. Tom Tugendhat, who chairs the Commons foreign affairs committee, said that the UK should introduce new laws to stop Russian oligarchs spending their wealth in London if the announcement is made.
High stakes - A disallowed goal at the end of a match in the Greek Superleague between Paok Salonika and AEK Athens led to a pitch invasion by one of the team owners, who is believed to have been carrying a gun. Paok’s owner Ivan Savvidis came on the pitch twice accompanied by bodyguards. On one occasion, Savvidis appeared to be carrying a pistol in its holder.
Loss for democracy - Pro-democracy campaigners in Hong Kong suffered losses after weekend elections saw their power significantly reduced in the city’s government. Democracy candidates failed to recapture two out of four seats on Sunday, meaning they will relinquish their power to block most bills in the city’s 70 seat parliament.
Rebranding nationalism - Marine Le Pen, leader of France's far-right National Front, has announced her plans to rebrand the party after her failed bid for president last year. She's proposing the party be renamed ‘Le Rassemblement National’ or ‘National Rally,’ in an attempt to broaden its appeal. Party members will vote to approve the name change by postal ballot in the coming weeks.
Canine chaos - Crufts dog show has ended in chaos in the UK after animal rights protesters stormed the arena as the winner was being announced live on television. The two intruders were wrestled to the ground by security as they tried to unfurl banners reading ‘canine eugenics’ after breaking through a barrier and onto the show floor at the NEC in Birmingham.
