A Christmas advert for a UK supermarket has been found to be too political to air and has been banned from hitting TV screens.

The retailer, Iceland, worked with Greenpeace to release an advert about a little girl and her orangutan friend. It deals heavily with the adverse affects palm oil has on natural habitats and the environment as a result of deforestation.

The orangutan featured in the animation has lost its mother and family due to human activity driving the palm oil industry, and it pays tribute to the 25 orangutans that die every day.

Iceland's overall message is that it will remove all palm oik from its own brand products until all palm oil production causes zero destruction.

Clearcast, a nongovernmental body that approves adverts on behalf of UK broadcasters, did not clear the ad, citing violations of British laws against political advertising on TV due to the collaboration with Greenpeace.

The decision caused a firestorm on social media, and a petition demanding that it be overturned has nearly reached 100,000 signatures.
