The teenage girl who was filmed stealing cash out of her Uber driver’s tip jar is facing a monumental backlash on social media and in the media.

18-year-old Gabrielle Canales, from Long Island, New York, was caught on camera reaching into the jar and taking a wad of cash. She was identified by Daily Mail and a number of other publications, with the former publishing photos and Instagram stories where she is seen mocking the outrage.

Canales told BuzzFeed News she immediately regretted her actions and she paid him back in tips that day, even supplying screenshots of what she alleges to be the tip she gave the driver. ‘I understand I'm completely wrong and I’m not denying it,’ she said.

‘The lesson was learned that same day. That’s why the gentlemen was paid back,’ she said, showing the receipt for $5 (that was the total she claimed she took from the jar). ‘It was me being childish,’ she said of the theft. ‘To the Uber driver, my sincere apologies.’

Uber suspended Canales' account after the video went viral, saying, ‘What’s been shown has no place on our app and the rider’s access to the app has been removed.’

It’s safe to say, her apologies and excuses for her behaviour have fallen flat with most people, and social media users continue to drag her relentlessly:
