Both fans' sides won their respective matches, but that didn't mean they weren't going to stick around after to help with the clean-up

Senegal football fans were celebrating their country’s 2-1 victory on Tuesday against Poland in their World Cup opener, becoming in turn the first African team to win at this year’s competition in Russia.

Elated supporters would be forgiven for throwing caution to the wind by celebrating in the stands without caring for their surroundings, but videos emerged on social media showing fans cleaning up after themselves in the stadium.

The videos have since gone viral. One clip, posted by Argentinian TV channel TyC Sports, depicted fans searching for rubbish and assembling it in a single pile. At the time of writing, it had been viewed more than six million times.

‘Senegal pulled off a historic victory,’ the channel said in Spanish. ‘But instead of partying in the minutes after the end of the game, they tasked themselves with cleaning up their section before leaving. #Respect.’

Japanese fans also proved their reputation as some of the politest supporters at World Cups as they were filmed cleaning up the Mordovia Arena in Saransk after their side’s 2-1 victory over Colombia.

Samurai Blue fans clean up after themselves with bin bags they’ve specifically brought into the ground for that purpose. They made headlines around the world by doing a similar thing during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The victory came after a difficult week for the nation with a 6.1 magnitude earthquake striking Osaka, killing five people and injuring hundreds more.
