NYPD hunts down British couple through Twitter to return lost engagement ring

This video shows the moment a British couple loses their engagement ring down a subway grate, just two hours after John Drennan had proposed against the backdrop of Central Park.

Drennan was so excited that his fiancée, Daniella Anthony, had said yes, that he made the error of insisting she wear the ring that day, despite her saying it was a little too big. Note to self: don't wear loose jewellery while standing over a subway grate.

Later that day, the happy couple were in Times Square when Anthony's new ring slipped off her finger and disappeared from sight. Her and her fiancé, along with the help of a handful of passers-by, spent two hours searching for the ring and trying to fish it out from the depths of of New York City. But the rescue mission was unsuccessful and left the two with no choice but to accept that the ring was gone and not coming back, and walk away without it.

Fortunately, the entire episode was caught on camera, which then went viral following a tweet from official NYPD Twitter account. Some officers had managed to retrieve the ring and were looking for the couple, so they made an appeal on the social media platform.

The online search caught the attention of a friend of the couple, who quickly got in touch to let them know that the police were looking for them.

'We could not believe it, we really thought it was gone. We don’t use Twitter – we had absolutely no idea this was going on. But we are so happy,' said Anthony.

'The (now) happy couple is back in their home country, but thanks to your retweets they heard we were looking for them! We’re making arrangements to get them their ring back. Congratulations!' the NYPD wrote on Sunday.
