‘Racial slur’ - Donald Trump told a group of Native Americans there was a representative in Congress called ‘Pocahontas’ - the racial slur he frequently uses in reference to Senator Elizabeth Warren. Speaking in the White House to Navajo Native American ‘code talkers’, military veterans who used their indigenous language as a code to pass messages during Second World War, he made a careless and offensive reference to the female senator.
Irish crisis averted - The Irish deputy prime minister, Frances Fitzgerald, is to resign in a move that appears to save the minority government of Leo Varadkar from collapse and early elections. Her position – and that of Varadkar – has come under pressure over her handling of information about the treatment of a police whistleblower.
Volcanic disruption - Indonesian officials have shut the international airport in Bali for a second day, as Mount Agung spews volcanic ash into the atmosphere. Plumes of dark ash were seen reaching as high as 3km (2 miles) above the summit of the volcano, which began erupting last week. Officials raised the alert to the highest level on Monday, fearing an imminent major eruption.
German politician injured - The mayor of a German town was injured in a knife attack in an assault that appeared to be motivated by his pro-refugee stance. Andreas Hollstein, 57, the mayor of the western town of Altena, was attacked on Monday evening at a local kebab restaurant by a man who had loudly criticised his liberal refugee policy.
Kenya’s political déjà vu - Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged to overcome Kenya's divisions after being sworn in for a second term as president, at a ceremony boycotted by the opposition. Speaking after his inauguration in the capital Nairobi, he said he would try to incorporate some of the opposition's ideas ‘in the spirit of inclusivity’.
Lucky miss - A crocodile attack that left a British tourist with a leg wound has been captured on camera in Australia. In the footage, posted to Facebook by Ally Bullifent, a crocodile can be seen jumping out of the water towards the women as they scream. Don’t watch if you’re scared of crocodiles!
