A Priti tough week - Theresa May is facing a second cabinet reshuffle in a week as another MP resigned yesterday. Priti Patel, former international development secretary, was forced to resign after it emerged that she had held undisclosed meetings with Israeli officials. She was forced to cut short a trip to Africa and fly back to the UK yesterday for an emergency meeting with May - with at least 22,000 people tracking her flight on Flightradar24 in an almost satirical online witch hunt - where she is said to have apologised and handed in her resignation. Patel is due to be replaced today. This comes after Michael Fallon quit last week amid a sexual harassment scandal that has rocked Westminster. If strong and stable was what the Conservative Party was going for, this is not it.
‘Time is quickly running out’ - US President Donald Trump is currently on a 12-day tour of Asia to develop diplomatic relations with world leaders. He has just landed in China, a much anticipated stop, and has used his time there to urge China to take fast and effective action on North Korea. Speaking at the the Great Hall of the People, Trump praised his ‘warm and gracious’ host, before adding: ‘But time is quickly running out. We must act fast, and hopefully China will act faster and more effectively on this problem than anyone. China can fix this problem easily and quickly and I am calling on China and your great president to hopefully work on it very hard.’
Green money - Billionaire Michael Bloomberg is taking his fight against climate change across the Atlantic. He has been leading a $164 million campaign in the US to stop the use of fossil fuels by supplying funding at the grassroots level, and he is now expanding into Europe. Today, he announced a $50 million plan to fund campaigns, research into the health impacts of coal, and legal action against coal plants. Since his crusade across America, half the nation’s coal-fired power plants have been closed.
‘Butterfly’ boy saved - Scientists have tried out a pioneering new treatment on a seven-year-old ‘butterfly’ boy who was on the brink of death. Scientists used stem cells and gene therapy to replace 80 per cent of the boy’s skin. The treatment’s success marks a turning point in medical research and offers an innovative new way to deal with rare skin conditions. After 21 months the boy, who had been admitted to a hospital burns unit close to death, appeared to be fully recovered and his new skin no longer blistered.
Forgotten crisis - A senior UN official has warned that Yemen faces the world’s largest famine in decades if aid deliveries aren’t resumed. Mark Lowcock, the UN under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs, said there will be ‘millions of victims’ if the Saudi-led coalition doesn’t lift its blockade on the war-ravaged country. On Monday, the coalition shut air, land and sea routes into Yemen after Houthi rebels fired a missile at the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Without the aid, impoverished Yemeni citizens face starvation and a growing cholera epidemic.
A year on… - As Hillary Clinton reflects on her election loss to Donald Trump a year ago, Teen Vogue has announced that it she will guest-edit their December print issue. The special Clinton-themed issue of the seminal teenage magazine will publish a letter from the former presidential candidate to her teenage self, and feature a montage of images representing different stages of her life on the cover. It will also include pieces about her childhood best friend, Betsy Ebeling, and her daughter, Chelsea.
