Macron attacks Trumpism
French President Emmanuel Macron has admitted that he may have failed in his efforts to persuade Donald Trump to remain part of the Iran Nuclear Deal. ‘My view is... that he will get rid of this deal on his own, for domestic reasons,’ Macron said at the end of a three-day state visit to the US. Macron also delivered considerable blows to the US president during his speech to the joint houses of the US Congress, denouncing nationalism and isolationism. The speech was widely interpreted as a thinly veiled attack on Trump's America First agenda. ‘We can choose isolationism, withdrawal or nationalism,’ Macron said in his first address to Congress. ‘But closing the door to the world will not stop the evolution of the world’
North Korea’s collapsed nuclear site
North Korea’s main nuclear test site has partially collapsed as a result of multiple explosions, a study by Chinese geologists shows. Speculation about whether it could even be used for future nuclear tests and developments has arisen, casting doubt on North Korea’s sincerity in announcing last weekend that it would stop testing nuclear weapons. The revelations come ahead of Friday’s summit between the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, and the South Korean president, Moon Jae-in. The test site at Punggye-ri, in a mountainous area of North Korea’s, has been the location for all six of the regime’s nuclear tests since 2006.
Golden State killer finally brought to justice
An elderly ex-policeman has been arrested and charged with eight murders linked to the notorious Golden State Killer, a serial criminal responsible for dozens of rapes and killings that terrorised parts of California during the 1970s and 1980s. The suspect was identified at a Sacramento news conference as 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo in a case officials said was finally solved by DNA evidence roughly two months after gaining renewed attention in the bestselling book, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.
Danish inventor gets life in prison
Danish inventor Peter Madsen has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of the Swedish journalist Kim Wall on his submarine in a case that has gripped the media world. Madsen had planned to kill 30-year-old Wall either by suffocating her or cutting her throat, the Copenhagen court heard. Her dismembered remains were found by Danish police at sea on 21 August last year, 11 days after she interviewed him on board his vessel. Madsen, 47, was found guilty of premeditated murder and sexual assault after previously admitting to dismembering Wall's body on the submarine and throwing her remains overboard. He will appeal against his conviction.
