Swedes prepare for war
The Swedish government is reissuing a war pamphlet to all 4.8 million households in the country, informing them for the first time in more than 30 years on the rules of war. The brochure, titled ‘Om krisen eller kriget kommer (If crisis or war comes),’ was compiled by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and instructs civilians on what to do if ‘their everyday life was turned upside down.’ The brochure provides information on everything from how to identify fake news and prepare against extreme weather conditions to what to do in the event of terror attacks and military conflicts.
A year on from tragedy
Ariana Grande paid tribute to the city of Manchester, UK, on Tuesday to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the terror attack that killed 22 people attending her concert. Suicide bomber Salman Abedi carried out the attack as thousands of people left the Manchester Arena on May 22, 2017. Grande, who visited the injured in hospital in the wake of the bombing and returned just two weeks later to host a fund-raising concert, wrote on Twitter: ‘Thinking of you all today and every day I love you with all of me and am sending you all of the light and warmth I have to offer on this challenging day.’
Deadly heatwave in Pakistan
A Pakistani organisation says the heatwave gripping the region has killed 65 people in Karachi. Anwar Kazmi, a spokesman for the non-governmental Edhi Foundation, said on Tuesday that 65 bodies had been taken to its morgue over the past four days due to heat-related deaths, including those of people who died after losing consciousness on the streets.
Doubts loom
The South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, is due to hold talks in the White House with Donald Trump on Tuesday amid uncertainty over Trump’s planned North Korean summit in Singapore next month. Trump was reported by the New York Times to have been ‘surprised and angered’ by a statement from a senior North Korean official last week that said the regime would not give up its nuclear arsenal and would not settle for a ‘one-sided’ outcome to Trump’s summit with Kim Jong-un, due to take place on 12 June.
Death toll rises in Cuba plane crash
The death toll of Cuba's deadliest plane crash in 30 years has risen to 111 after one of the survivors died of her injuries on Monday evening. Grettel Landrove, 23, was a flamenco dancer and student engineer. TMexico's civil air authority suspended the operations of a company that owned the plane involved in the crash. Officials said in a statement that Aerolíneas Damojh was under ‘extraordinary verification’. The charter company had leased the aeroplane to Cuban state airlines Cubana de Aviación.
