A Pennsylvanian church decided to honour their guns on the same day the survivors of the Florida high school massacre went back to school. Nice move, hey?

Worshippers turned up to the Unification Church wearing crowns made out of bullets and clutching rifles as they received communion wine and praised their lord.

The gun of choice was an AR-15, the same one used by 19-year-old Nikolas Jacob Cruz to murder 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida.

Unification Church commitment ceremony

The Unification Church believes that the AR-15 symbolises the ‘rod of iron’ described in the Bible’s book of Revelation. Reverend Sean Moon, leader of the church, encouraged couples to bring the weapons to the service to receive a blessing.

According to USA today, he prayed for ‘a kingdom of peace police and peace militia where the citizens, through the right given to them by almighty God to keep and bear arms, will be able to protect one another and protect human flourishing.’

But the ceremony didn’t go ahead without local backlash. Protesters gathered outside the service, with someholding posters that read: ‘Worship God, Not Guns’ and ‘God Does Not Bless Guns.’

Church members carried rifles and wore crowns made out of bullets

An estimated 500 people attended with the same weapon used in the recent Florida massacre, forcing a local school district to move students at a nearby elementary school to other premises.

The church confirmed that each weapon was checked at the door to make sure it was unloaded and secured, protesters still told congregation members: ‘It’s scaring people in the community,’ one said. ‘Are you aware of that?’
