Reddit is taking a harder line with ‘fake porn’, which includes imagery and videos that superimpose someone’s face over an explicit photo or video without the person's permission.

Celebrities are among those most affected by fake pornography as new technological advancements have changed the scope of material. The development of artificial intelligence software has made it relatively easy to create clips featuring computer-generated versions of celebrities' faces.

Reddit is a breeding ground for users to share and discuss so-called ‘deepfake’ videos. The ‘front page of the internet’ had been under growing pressure to act after other platforms - including Twitter, Gfycat and Pornhub - introduced their own deepfake bans.

However, because Reddit is a site predicated on openness and a lack of censorship, it has left some with a sour taste in their mouths. The move may cause unease among some Redditors who already feared the platform was surveilled more heavily after it closed two alt-right forums in 2017.

The practice of fake porn was brought to wider attention in December when the news site Motherboard reported how fake videos of the Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot had been created.

However, it became much more easy to achieve after January's release of a software tool called FakeApp, which made it possible to carry out the process with a single button press.
